UNBOXED LIGHT |

STATEMENT A viewer enters room and finds a wooden box, white on the inside, black on the outside that hovers approximately twelve inches above the floor. Dozens of multi-color string emanate from the box. Two lights project shadow of the string on the walls around the box. Visually, the installation is a meditation on light, color, and shadow. It is also a trick of the eye. Not one of the strings could support the weight of the box, but in unison, they lift and support the box. The piece is a visual example of strength in numbers; a metaphor for the power of community. The installation is also intended as a tool for artists. I wanted to create an image that is explosive and powerful but not violent and destructive. To that end, once installed, I plan to create a series of photograph that use some of the same techniques I used to create Speed of Light and Day and Night. My hope is that other artists will draw or paint the installation. |
